Dublin Zoo mourns the death of 7-yr-old elephant

Zinda, an elephant who was seven years old, passed away, according to Dublin Zoo, reports RTE.

The zoo claimed in a statement that the elephant’s cause of death was Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV).

It comes after Avani, another elephant, passed away on July 1st due to the same infection.

“Despite receiving round the clock care from our dedicated veterinary team and international experts, Zinda’s condition deteriorated,” claimed the statement, reports RTE.

“EEHV is an unpredictable and fatal virus affecting young elephants both in the wild and under human care,” it stated.

Human health is not at danger from EEHV.

Zinda passed away after a “unprecedented effort” involving governments, gardaí, and a British zoo to save the animal’s life, reports RTE.

Dublin Zoo said that “both the Irish and UK governments facilitated the urgent importation of vital blood products and other essential supplies from Chester Zoo” .

“The antibodies and help fight the infection” was the stated goal of this action.

Chester Zoo was thanked profusely by Dublin Zoo for “their unwavering support during this critical time”.

“A special thank you also goes to An Garda Síochána, who escorted the blood products from Dublin Port to the zoo,” added the statement, reports RTE.
