Starting Thursday, more than 120,000 families nationwide will receive the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, reports The Mirror.
A one-time payment known as the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance is given to qualified families to help with the expense of resuming their children’s education. For children enrolled in second-level school, the rate of payment for 2024 is €160 for those between the ages of 4 and 11 and €285 for those 12 and beyond.
Payments to over 126,000 families, including over 223,000 children, totaling over €47.5 million will be given this week, according to Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys TD, reports The Mirror.
Most payments will be made automatically; an application is not needed. These payments are presently being processed by the Department of Social Protection, and the recipients will get confirmation via mail or their MyWelfare account stating their automatic entitlement.
Even if they got a payment the previous year, families who do not get information from the Department of an automatic payment should submit an online application here.
Speaking about the payouts, Minister Humphreys stated: “This programme is crucial for helping parents cover their back-to-school expenses in the upcoming week, reports The Mirror.
“The costs associated with children both starting and returning to school can put a lot of financial pressure on families throughout the country. The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance provides valuable support to families to assist with these costs and I would urge anybody who has not yet applied to check their eligibility for the scheme,” reports The Mirror.
