Dublin’s Temple Bar has been ranked among the worst tourist traps globally in a new report.

An updated study by Nomad eSIM has revealed the world’s biggest tourist traps for 2026, with findings showing that Temple Bar has climbed from third place in 2025 to second place worldwide.

To identify the most prominent tourist traps, Nomad analysed the 50 most visited countries using data from the UNWTO.

They then reviewed top attractions in each location via TripAdvisor, filtering feedback that included the phrase “tourist trap” and ranking destinations accordingly, reports The Mirror.

Mentions of “tourist trap” in online reviews for Temple Bar increased significantly from 687 to 1,022 over the past year, with visitors highlighting issues such as high prices, noisy stag parties, and a perceived lack of authentic local culture. One reviewer described it as “overcrowded, overpriced and overrated,” reports The Mirror.

Another reviewer said: “Disgusting place. The smell of urine, dirty, drunken people, litter everywhere, overpriced, rude unfriendly people. It was simply disgusting. Not safe during the day and definitely not at night. Not a place to bring kids,” reports The Mirror.

Wei Liang Siow, spokesperson for Nomad eSIM, offered advice on how travellers can avoid tourist traps and enjoy a smoother holiday experience.

“Tourist traps usually happen when an attraction stops being about the place itself and starts being about selling to visitors,” he said. “Crowds increase and prices go up, and the original charm that made the place unique often starts to disappear, reports The Mirror.

“It’s important to note, though, that the attractions themselves aren’t the problem, it’s how they’ve been reshaped or commercialized in ways that push tourists to spend more or leave feeling underwhelmed, reports The Mirror.

“A good way to avoid this is to wander a few streets beyond the busiest areas and notice where locals actually spend their time, reports The Mirror.

“Skip places with flashy signs or aggressive vendors, and instead look for spots that feel calmer and more genuine, reports The Mirror.

“Traveling during quieter seasons can also make a big difference, giving you a more relaxed and authentic experience. And if you get the chance, ask locals for recommendations: they’ll most likely be very excited to point you toward their favourite spots,” reports The Mirror.
