€1,000 reward offered after thugs set a dog on fire in Co Mayo

The North West Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Ballina is offering a reward of €1,000 for identifying the person responsible for the dog arson in County Mayo earlier this month, reports RTE.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, its chair Cathy O’Hora said she was “horrified” and “extremely upset” by what had happened.

“We have put up a reward of €1,000, it’s not something that we can afford but it’s far more important that we find who is responsible for this,” reports RTE.

She described the dog as a mixed breed, small to medium sized dog and expressed concern that she did not know who the culprit was.

“My concern is, have they done it before? Is it going to happen again? Will it be worse?,” reports RTE.

She said there was no hard evidence in the case because it happened off-camera, and added that he therefore offered the reward “because someone, somewhere, has to know something”, reports RTE.

The incident happened on July 6, and the dog died as a result of his injuries.

Another problem Mrs. O’Hora pointed out is that there is no animal welfare officer in Mayo and never has been.

She said the North West SPCA receives frequent calls and texts about cases of animal cruelty, but is not authorized to enter the property.

“The only thing a rescue can do is go door-to-door and say ‘would you surrender the animal to us’?,” reports RTE.
