Elderly pensioner vows to drive without insurance after premium almost doubles in price despite never making a claim in 72 years

An extremely angry and determined elderly motorist has swore that he will never pay for his motor insurance again after his premium scandalously doubled despite the fact he has never made a claim in 72 years.

The man who has had enough Tom Nolan 86, has claimed he will break the law after he has seen his premium being massively increased from €580 to €941.85.

The enraged long serving motorist Tom also revealed that despite his best efforts he could not get the price of his premium down after he enquired with two other companies remarkably gave him even higher quotes of €999 and €1,600.

The 86 year from Kimmage, told the Irish Sun that he now fully plans to ignore the law in protest and drive without insurance when his policy ends on August 20.

A rightly disheartened Tom explained: “Is the Government not looking into this? It is unfair to people driving all their lives, I am driving since I was 14 years of age so am an experienced driver.

“I have no penalty points and I was never in an accident and I only use my car once a week, roughly around six miles, and that is what is getting me down. I have to pay that type of money for a car lying outside my house for all that length of time.

“But I’m with FBD and it went up to €941.85 – almost double what it is now. I rang two others. Zurich was €1,600, the other quote was with Axa and it was €999.

“I can’t believe it. All my life, from the time I started to drive, I never got any accidents or anything like that. To think that is how they are treating drivers.

“So I was born in 1929 but to look at me you wouldn’t think I’m 70. I get around great, thank God.

“I asked is there no low-mile insurance? I do six miles a week because the supermarket is right beside me, and the chemist is around the corner. And I walk to all these places. They just said all insurance has gone up.

“I’m not going to insure the car. I use it so little. I will go out and take a chance. I am not going to pay for a car that is out lying there all of the time.

“But I know it is dangerous, and wrong to do that, but there are thousands out there with no insurance. Is anyone going to listen to what I am saying?”

Tom added: “When I got the FBD statement it nearly depressed me so I said I would phone two more, but that has made it worse.

“I wish to God these people charging so much for the insurance would come out and see the person they are dealing with.

“I don’t even get any help. I do everything myself — washing up and hoovering.”
