New report by Irish Water shows that local authorities have not paid outstanding water charges on vacant properties

According to reports this morning Irish Water have not recieved all required payments on outstanding water charges from local authorities in regards to vacant social housing units.

The news comes as the state utility revealed that it is not just the average householder who are refusing to pay their bill. It is understood that all owners of dwellings which are not permanently occupied are required to pay a maximum annual fee of €125 for maintaining connection to water mains.

However recent statistics have showed that there were 4,500 council-owned social housing units unoccupied across Ireland in 2015.

Irish Water say they only collected just 174 payments on vacant council units last year.
