According to the latest poll, only four points now separate Fine Gael and Fianna Fail.

Fine Gael commands 27% of the political pie, while Fianna Fail is quickly gaining ground, currently standing at 23%.

And Gerry Adams’ party is down two points, currently enjoying a 19% support. Smaller parties and Independents are on 25pc.

Labour, meanwhile, is trailing behind badly, with only 6% support. This will likely translate as big losses for Joan Burton’s party on election.

Yet, Public Spending Minister Brendan Howlin remains optimist to the bitter end. He said “Having spent many many hours on the doors, and talked to candidates across the country, one thing I’m certain of is that the Labour Party is on considerably more than 4 percent.”
