Election 2016: Voting underway in one of the closest-fought elections in Irish history

Polling stations will remain open until 10pm across the country today, to allow all those who wish to cast their vote to do so.

Just over 3.2m people are eligibile to vote.

The election pits 550 candidates battling it out to get one of 157 Dáil seats available across 40 constituencies.

Counting will get underway tomorrow, Saturday, with preliminary counts expected in late afternoon.
