Election promises galore: Fianna Fail and Labour speak about tax cuts and pay rises ahead of the looming election

promises

It’s all smiles and nods during pre-election raids. It’s all “Yes sir”, and “Of course we will, ma’am”, when canvassing for the votes of the masses.

Today, Fianna Fail said that they would scrap the ‘interim’ USC for those earning less than €80,000, and Labour promised to raise the minimum wage to €11.30 if they are put in charge of the country once more.

Refuting Fianna Fail’s claims, Fine Gael stomped their feet in unison and raised their fists as one, saying that Fianna Fail will actually do nothing of the sort and that they have no real plan for the economy.

Joan Burton’s Labour meanwhile, said that they were firmly committed to raise the minimum wage and to ensure that every worker has a proper pension.

And so it goes on, the merry go round of promises that are as ephemeral as water in a sift.
