New laws are to be introduced today that will require electric vehicles to have a noise emitting device.
Under the new laws set out by the European Union, all vehicles must be fitted with acoustic vehicle alert systems.
It is believed that the new laws come into effect in order to provide safety to other road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.
The AVAS system will apparently work by alerting road users if an electric vehicle is reversing or travelling at speeds under 12km/h.
