Reopening national broadband tender could delay implementation up to five years, claims Fine Gael

The Minister of State for Housing Damien English was speaking on RTE’s The Week In Politics and claimed that if they government reopens the broadband tender that it could potentially see a delay of up to three and five years for the procurement process.

English was forced to make a statement about the national braodband plan after the government gave the go ahead for a €3 billion contract yet Eir came out last week and said that it could just as good, if not an even better job for €1 billion – saving the taxpayer literally billions of euro.

This doesn’t look like it’s going away any time soon as no one knows how long the current contract will actually take to implement anyway. It’ll eventually serve some 500,000 homes and businesses with decent broadband services.
