Elite Irish Army Rangers may be deployed to the African country of Mali in the coming weeks

A 12-strong platoon of the elite Irish Army Rangers unit may be deployed to Mali in the coming weeks, if the request put forward by the Minister for Defence is granted by the Government.

If the deployment comes to pass, it will be the first time in a decade that the Rangers are deployed on a foreign mission.

The Rangers would be involved in long-range patrols in Mali, alongside UN units.
