Elite Ukrainian operators have eliminated no fewer than 500 Wagner fighters in a single operation after a Russian unit simply turned around and fled, fully exposing Wagner’s flank. This is the largest tactical victory for Ukraine in months.
Ukraine’s 3rd Assault Brigade, backed by T-64 tanks and M-113 APCs, was tasked with assaulting a chain of fortified defensive positions manned by elements of the 72nd Motor Rifle Brigade, a regular infantry unit, southwest of Bakhmut. The fortifications were roughly two kilometers deep and six kilometers long, with the 72nd Brigade covering Wagner’s flank.
While the tanks and APCs laid down heavy suppressive fire on the Russian positions, Ukrainian operators charged forward using automatic weapons and grenades to clear trenches, routing the defenders. According to battle reports, two entire Russian companies (anything between 200-300 men) were wiped out. The rest fled, with tanks in hot pursuit, firing at close range and causing devastating casualties.
Once the line of fortifications was cleared of defenders, Wagner’s flank became immediately exposed. Taken by surprise, the mercenaries stood zero chance. The operation further yielded combat vehicles and a number of prisoners.
Ukrainian units can now use this sector southwest of Bakhmut as a bridgehead from where to launch renewed assaults.
