Elon Musk says that he is creating a new US political party

Elon Musk, a former close associate of US President Donald Trump, has announced the creation of a new political party in the US, aimed at challenging what he called the nation’s “one-party system”, reports RTE.

Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual and the top political contributor to President Trump’s 2024 campaign, had a public fallout with the president after leading Trump’s initiative to reduce federal spending and cut government jobs through the so-called Department of Government Efficiency.

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk wrote on X, the social media platform he owns, reports RTE.

“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” he declared, reports RTE.

He referred to a poll he had posted on X the day before, on US Independence Day, where he asked users whether they “want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system” that has long dominated American politics.

The simple yes-or-no poll drew over 1.2 million responses, reports RTE.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk posted today, reports RTE.

Tensions between Trump and Musk flared again late last month when President Trump urged Republicans in Congress to pass his expansive domestic agenda, bundled into a proposal dubbed the One Big Beautiful Bill.

Musk strongly opposed the bill and launched sharp criticism at its Republican supporters, accusing them of endorsing what he called “debt slavery”, reports RTE.

He promptly pledged to form a new political party in response, targeting lawmakers who campaigned on fiscal restraint but supported the legislation, which analysts estimate will add another $3.4 trillion to the national deficit over the next ten years.

Following Musk’s harsh condemnation of the bill—which passed through Congress and was signed into law—President Trump retaliated by threatening to revoke federal funding for Musk’s companies and potentially have him deported, reports RTE.

“We’ll have to take a look,” Trump said when asked by reporters whether he was considering deporting Musk, who was born in South Africa and has been a US citizen since 2002, reports RTE.
