Elon Musk has suggested that all users of social media platform X pay to use the service in order to stop bots on the site, reports Breaking News.
During a live-streamed conversation on artificial intelligence (AI) with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, the billionaire said the company is “moving towards a small monthly payment for use of the X system,” reports Breaking News.
Musk said it was the “only way” to deal with the “vast armie of bots” that wanted to create large networks of accounts to distribute content on the platform.
X is currently free to use, but there is a paid tier called X Premium that gives the user a verification tag as well as access to additional features such as longer posts and more features and promotions on their content in exchange for a monthly fee.
However, Mr Musk has now suggested that the company is considering putting the entire site behind a paywall.
“We’re actually going to come up with a lower tier pricing… we just want it to be a small amount of money. This is a longer discussion, but, in my view, this is actually the only defence against vast armies of bots,” he said.
Musk has previously said that multiple campaign groups falsely accused him and X of anti-Semitism, causing the site to lose millions of dollars in revenue due to the ad boycott.
In a conversation with Netanyahu, the Israeli leader said he knew Mr Musk was “committed” to stopping antisemitism following the billionaire reiterating he is anti- hate speech.
