Tough guy Harris: ‘Action will be taken’ on Grand Canal tents, says Taoiseach

Simon Harris, the Taoiseach, has promised that “action will be taken” to relocate the asylum seekers’ tents in Dublin’s city centre, reports RTE.

Currently, 100 tents are erected along the Grand Canal to provide refuge for unaccommodated candidates for International Protection.

Since Friday night, when the first tents were set up between Huband Bridge and Mount Street Bridge, the number has been gradually increasing.

Situated just a short distance away from the International Protection Office, the site saw the removal of over 100 tents on this same day last week during a multi-agency operation, reports RTE.

A public health disaster was avoided, according to Mr. Harris, who called the removal of tents from Mount Street a “good action.”

The Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae charged that the Government had lost control of the immigration situation, to which the Taoiseach was reacting.

The tents on Mount Street were home to some 300 unhoused asylum seekers. Last week, they were provided other accommodations in Dublin’s Citywest and Crooksling neighbourhoods, reports RTE.

However, according to recent data, 1,764 applicants for international protection are now without shelter supplied by the state.

According to the Department of Integration, that is 54 more persons than it was yesterday.

The Department suddenly updated the data today, even though it normally only releases them on Tuesdays and Fridays.

According to the data, 98 men have applied for asylum since Friday, reports RTE.
