Emergency alert system will cost taxpayer up to €15 million

A cell broadcast public warning system approved by the Government is estimated to cost as much as €15 million to implement.

Communications Minister Patrick O’Donovan has secured Cabinet approval to advance procurement for the system, which will enable emergency alerts to be sent directly to mobile phones in areas affected by major incidents, reports Breaking News.

His department said the decision reflects “the growing need for rapid, effective communication during severe weather events and other emergencies.”

The system is designed to use cell broadcast technology, which allows alerts to be delivered instantly to all compatible mobile devices within a defined geographic area, without being impacted by network congestion, reports Breaking News.

The project will proceed to procurement in 2026, with full implementation expected in 2027.

The Department of Communications confirmed the estimated cost ranges from €12.5 million to €15 million, depending on the equipment and services ultimately procured, reports Breaking News.
