The tennis champion Serena Williams has said that she intends to play in the US Open later this month and then retire from tennis.

According to the Metro, Williams, who has won an incredible 23 Grand Slams feels that it is getting closer to the time when her life needs to move in a different direction.

Williams has been a professional tennis player since she was just 14.  Together with her older sister Venus she dominated women’s tennis for many years, acting as a role model for young tennis competitors all over the world.  The actor Will Smith recently starred in “King Richard”, a film about Ms. Williams’ childhood when she and her sister were coached by their father Richard.

Williams’ retirement will mark the end of an era in women’s tennis and this year’s US Open will have a special significance as it looks to be one of the last opportunities to watch Serena playing before she retires.
