“End of your political career” Irate Dubliners express fury at social democrat cllr Gary Gannon after O’Devaney Gardens vote

Since Dublin City Council voted 38 votes to 19 to approve the plans for the redevelopment of O’Devaney Gardens outraged Dubliners have been venting their disgust on the streets and online, in particular Cllr Gary Gannon.

One of the main targets of the people’s ire is Social Democrats councillor, Gary Gannon, who along with some of his fellow councillors allegedly required a Garda escort when leaving Dublin City Hall on Monday night as outraged protestors engaged in a peaceful demonstration at the building.

Now Dubliners have taken to the councillor’s social media accounts to express their fury with some promising Cllr Gannon that his support for the redevelopment will mean the “end of his career in politics”.

As part of the approved redevelopment the historic area will see Developer Bartra Capital given a contract to build 768 housing units.

Dubliners have been left in shock however, after the avowed social democrat appears to have abandoned his principles and assertions regarding the provision of larger numbers of social and affordable housing.

In fact, commentators on Mr Gannon’s social media accounts are asking him to address the fact that the “affordable homes” that are set to be built will be capped at €310,000, hardly affordable to struggling Dublin families.

As Ireland is in the midst of an unprecedented housing crisis, parties like the Social Democrats continue to use the situation to score political points.

However, many social users are claiming that when the time comes, these politicians and parties, abandon their principles, which appear to be only rhetoric, and hand lucrative contracts to private developers using public land as Gary Gannon of the Social Democrats has done in this case.

One social media user commented that it’s the “end of your political career” towards Gannon.
