The European Commission has announced that 70% of the adult population in the European Union had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, a target set earlier this year.
After a slow start, the announcement marks an important step in the EU’s vaccination strategy, but it also hides big differences between EU countries: some countries exceed the target of 70 percent, while others in the eastern region of the poorer bloc are being left behind.
“70% of adults in EU are fully vaccinated. I want to thank the many people making this great achievement possible,” the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said on Twitter.
