Spain’s general election has resulted in another hung parliament as Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s Socialists won the most seats but not enough to form a majority government while nationalist-populist Vox party surged in the polls.

With 99.9 percent of the votes counted, the Socialists have won 120 seats, losing three seats from the last election and they have also lost its majority in the Senate, while Vox, led by 43-year-old Santiago Abascal surged from winning 24 in the last election to winning 52 this time out.

The party was only founded in 2013 and has been a virulent opponent of the political establishment in Spain and the EU who condemn the party as “far-right”.

Abascal called his party’s success “the greatest political feat seen in Spain”.

Meanwhile, the establishment right wing party has also seen renewed success winning 88 seats compared to 66 in the previous election.

The election was called in a bid to break the political deadlock in the country; however, the results have only served further deepen the partisan divide.
