Europe’s highest ever temperature could be recorded as Sicily reportedly sees temperatures reach 48.8C

Europe could officially see its highest ever temperature as the Italian Island of Sicily reported a temperature of 48.8C.

The staggering temperature which is yet to be officially confirmed, comes as Southern Europe is experiencing a sweltering heatwave.

It is understood the extraordinary temperature was recorded in the city of Syracuse on Wednesday by the Sicily Meteorological and Agricultural service.

The high temperatures which have worried officials in the region come as the Mediterranean has been subjected to a sweltering heatwave caused by a hot air plume which has moved in from North Africa.
