Euthanasia on the way to Ireland? Oireachtas committee are recommending legislation for assisted dying

The introduction of assisted suicide and euthanasia in Ireland is expected to be recommended by the Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying, reports RTE.

The primary target of the law would be individuals who have been diagnosed with a progressive, advanced, incurable, irreversible, or medical condition that would result in death within six months.

This window of time is probably set at a year for neurodegenerative diseases.

According to the committee, the proposed legislation should specify that the patient’s disease must be causing them pain that cannot be alleviated in a way that they feel bearable, reports RTE.

In these situations, the patient would be qualified for an assisted dying assessment, which would be supervised by a medical practitioner.

In an assisted suicide, the individual wishing to terminate their life would take the necessary steps to do so.

Euthanasia, on the other hand, is also advised; in this case, a physician would end a patient’s life if the patient was physically unable to give a medication, reports RTE.

There will be a conscientious provision in the committee report that permits any physician, nurse, or other medical professional to abstain from participation.

The committee feels that there is no need to amend the constitution, reports RTE.
