The Boston bombing suspect will likely face the death penalty if he is convicted. His legal team had attempted to cut a deal with prosecutors that would have spared Dzhokhar Tsarnaev execution but this was rejected.
The 21-year-old is charged with planting a bomb at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon, which killed three, injured 264 and caused at least 17 people to lose limbs. He has also been accused of murdering a police officer.
Mr Tsarnaev’s lawyer, Judy Clarke, has years of experience defending notorious criminals, including one of the September 11th conspirators and Ted Kaczynski, a domestic terrorist known as the Unabomber. Both avoided execution for their crimes.
