Facebook owner launching new app to rival Twitter

Meta Platforms plans to launch a Twitter-competing microblogging app called Threads, reports RTE.

This comes just days after Twitter boss Elon Musk drew criticism when he announced a temporary cap on the number of posts users can read on the social media site.

Threads will launch on Thursday and will allow users to retain followers of photo-sharing platform Instagram and keep the same username, according to a listing in Apple’s App Store.

The launch poses a direct challenge to Twitter, which has faced major controversy since Musk bought the company for $44 billion in 2022.

Last week, billionaire Tesla announced a list of new restrictions for the app, capping the number of tweets users can see per day, prompting an outcry from many users of the platform, reports RTE.

While alternative microblogging sites like Mastodon and Blue Sky have seen increases in users since Musk’s acquisition, none have matched Twitter.
