Falsely linking Shannon Airport to Gaza could do it ‘damage’, Martin says

Micheál Martin has said claims linking Shannon Airport to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza could “damage” the airport in Co Clare.

The Taoiseach said Shannon Airport was not being used to carry out bombing operations in Gaza, adding that there had been “repeated attempts to conflate Shannon with the war in Gaza, which was absolutely false”, reports Breaking News.

He also said there was no evidence to suggest that Irish airspace was being used to transport munitions intended for use in attacks on Iran.

“This is a continuing narrative from certain quarters politically within Ireland, which I think will damage Shannon if that kind of argument continues,” he said while speaking in Philadelphia during his St Patrick’s Day visit to the United States, reports Breaking News.

“There’s international law governing airspace, and we have arrangements made in terms of the rules, and the framework by which you can fly through Irish airspace,” reports Breaking News.

“Now, the capacity to investigate that or to intervene if there’s transgression is challenging and problematic, I think everyone would accept that,” reports Breaking News.

Speaking in Irish, he said US soldiers were visible at Shannon Airport when “chartered” flights stopped there after missions, but stressed that there was “nothing wrong” with this and that it caused “no harm”.

He said there were “no munitions” on board such flights and that this did not mean Shannon Airport was being used as a military airbase, reports Breaking News.

“There are no military bases in Ireland. We have to be clear about that,” he said, reports Breaking News.
