Malaysian Airlines flight MH 370 vanished without a trace on March 8, 2014, after veering far off its intended course for reasons yet unknown. It is believed the airplane ended up running out of fuel somewhere over the far reaches of the Indian Ocean and crashing into the sea. Despite intense searches, the wreckage has never been found, though some debris from the aircraft washed ashore in La Reunion island in August 2015.

Now, families of 12 passengers on board the fateful flight are planning to sue both the carrier and the Malaysian government over perceived shortcomings in settlement negotiations, and also over the poor handling of the event by Malaysian government officials.

International agreements stipulate a two-year deadline to file lawsuits arising from air disasters, hence many families waited until the last possible moment before taking legal action.

The Boeing 777 was carrying 239 people at the time of its disappeance. The vanishing of Flight MH 370 went on to become one of the greatest mysteries in modern aviation.
