Irish Water is inundated with calls from irate customers to say they are cancelling their payments

Throughout its short but colorful history, Irish Water has given the word ‘disaster’ a whole new meaning.

Now, a vast majority of customers who paid their bills are contacting the utility to say they’re either thinking of cancelling their payments, or to confirm they have already done so.

Such move comes after the likely scrapping of the charges in the near future.

The next bills are due to be paid by March 8, while a further round of payments was scheduled for October.

The wave of cancellations was sparked by comments made by Fine Gael minister Simon Coveney, who said that water charges “will feature in coalition talks.”

Though Mr. Coveney later apologised for the remarks, saying that he was speaking ‘loosely’, the damage was already done, and Irish Water is bound to be left out of pocket big time.
