The family of 13-yr-old Lauren O’Brien, who tragically died in a crash during an autograss racing event, have expressed their gratitude to everyone who came to her aid at the time of the accident, reports Breaking News.

Lauren, from Knockane, Terelton, Co Cork, was pronounced dead at the Castletown Kennigh track in Enniskean, West Cork, on Sunday afternoon.

She had been taking part in a race heat when her vehicle lost control and collided with a barrier. Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene at around 3.30 pm, reports Breaking News.

Despite their best efforts, they were unable to save her.

Her parents, Timmy and Therese, posted a notice on Rip.ie in which they extended thanks to the “emergency services, the Cork Autograss community, and those who helped,” reports Breaking News.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been confirmed. The family has requested donations to West Cork Rapid Response instead of flowers.

Lauren is survived by her parents, brother Josh, sister Shannon, grandparents Christy, Teresa, Connie and Ellen, her godparents, extended relatives, and many friends, reports Breaking News.

She was a well-liked first-year student at McEgan College in Macroom. The school paid tribute to her with a statement saying she had a “vivacious spirit and an ever-present twinkle in her eye.”

McEgan College opened on Monday from noon until 3 pm to provide a space for students and staff to seek support and pay their respects. Support was also available from the National Educational Psychological Services (NEPS), reports Breaking News.

Gardaí have launched an investigation into the crash. An incident review is scheduled to take place at a future date. They are appealing for any witnesses, particularly those with camera footage, to come forward.

Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact Bandon Garda Station at 023 8852200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any local Garda station, reports Breaking News.
