Penneys are set to introduce new fee at checkout from next week as warning gets issued to its customers

Penneys, the popular Irish retailer, is preparing to implement a significant update to its well-known carrier bags starting next week, reports The Mirror.

Until now, the high-street chain has been one of the few stores not to apply a fee for its recognizable brown paper bags at the checkout.

That will change on Monday, May 12, when Penneys begins charging 15 cents per bag, a move aimed at reducing single-use waste, reports The Mirror.

Penneys management said in a statement: “Across our business we use thousands of paper bags every day. While our paper bags are made from 100% recycled and recyclable materials, we’re always looking for ways to cut down on single-use waste. That’s why from May 12th 2025, we’ll be introducing a 15c charge on all paper bags, whether small, medium, or large,” reports The Mirror.

“Why the change? Research shows that introducing bag charges reduces the number of new bags customers use. It’s a simple step that encourages all of us to think twice about our use. We’re committed to being part of the solution when it comes to clothing and non-clothing waste, and this change is just one of the small steps we’re taking. We hope it inspires more customers to make the switch to reusable bags,” reports The Mirror.

Customers looking to avoid the 15 cent fee at checkout are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags when shopping at Penneys from next Monday.

“Already own a reusable shopping bag? Perfect, bring it along next time you pop in!” the statement from Penneys bosses added, reports The Mirror.

“Repurposing a shopping bag is a more sustainable (and cost-effective) option. Have a dig through your cupboards or car boot, chances are you’ve already got one ready to go,” reports The Mirror.

Reusable shopping bags will also be available to buy at the tills in various sizes, starting at €1. These will come in white or the classic brown design and are made from strong materials intended for repeated use.

For shoppers seeking a more fashionable option, Penneys will continue offering canvas tote bags year-round, reports The Mirror.
