The autopsy of George Floyd, whose death following his detainment by police in Minneapolis sparked riots across the United States, has found that he died of a combination of “police restraint combined with heart disease and potential intoxicants in his system” and not asphyxiation or strangulation by officer.
Footage taken of the detention of Mr Floyd went viral and sparked outrage after it showed a police officer kneeling on his neck for almost nine minutes as the distressed Floyd pleaded and screamed that he could not breath.
Floyd died later that day after becoming unresponsive and the four police officers involved in his arrest have been fired while Derek Chauvin who kneeled on the man’s neck was charged with murder.
In response to the finding by the pathologist the family of George Floyd have hired their own coroner to conduct and independent autopsy.
Attorney Ben Crump representing the family said “The family does not trust anything coming from the Minneapolis Police Department. How can they? We already saw the truth.”
Meanwhile, violent riots including arson and looting continue in cities across the United States as President Trump has called for law and order to be imposed.
