Farmers say they’ve been absolutely abandoned by the government

As municipal, European, and national elections draw near, the newly elected president of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) has stated that political parties cannot take farmers for granted, reports RTE.

Farmers feel abandoned and disappointed by the current government, according to Francie Gorman, the association’s president-elect for the coming year.

Speaking at the 69th Annual General Meeting of the IFA, he stated that farmers should have more influence over Irish and EU policies that impact them and that they should be compensated for their valuable contributions to realising Ireland’s environmental goals as they develop and modernise their farms.

Charlie McConalogue, the Minister of Agriculture, and Leo Varadkar, the Taoiseach, will address the AGM later today, reports RTE.

“Intensive agriculture continues to drive declines in water quality, increasing GHGs, ammonia emissions and biodiversity loss,” Dr Elaine McGoff, Head of Advocacy with An Taisce said, reports RTE.
