The deadly stabbing in Dublin’s downtown this morning has been called “alarming, shocking, and deeply concerning” by the Tánaiste, reports RTE.
Following the incident on South Anne Street in the early hours of this morning, the Gardaà have opened a murder inquiry into the death of a man in his 30s.
It is believed that the event happened when two groups of individuals out socialising got into a fight, reports RTE.
According to Simon Harris, who was speaking in Munich, the event would have worried a lot of people in the city and beyond.
According to the Tánaiste, the Garda Commissioner regularly updates Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan on the tragic stabbing.
According to him, the minister is “working tirelessly” with his government colleagues to put more gardaà on the streets of Dublin and around the nation, reports RTE.
“I am very conscious there is an active ongoing murder investigation that’s now been opened in relation to this issue, we have seen the loss of life of one person and another person who is seriously injured in hospital, we need to obviously to let that murder investigation proceed,” reports RTE.
Minister O’Callaghan said: “An Garda SÃochána are keeping me updated on the shocking incident which occurred early this morning on Dawson Street. Dubliners deserve to feel safe in our city. That’s a priority,” reports RTE.
The justice spokeswoman for Sinn Féin called the event “deeply disturbing” and claimed it shocked people.
According to Matt Carthy, there is a “serious problem” with public safety in Dublin’s downtown, with insufficient gardaà on the streets.
He demanded that Minister O’Callaghan “bring forward a plan to make Dublin, our capital city, safe for all those who live, work, do business there as well as for visitors to the city” immediately, reports RTE.
Dublin MEP Aodhán Ó RÃordáin has demanded “real action” to address anti-social conduct, criminality, and decay in the city core.
He added in a statement that more gardaà should be visible in Dublin and that the man’s death was tragic.
Sean Phillips of Kehoes Pub on South Anne Street said: “There’s ten or 12 businesses closed today and Saturday is one of our busiest days. You just see the blood on the street. That’s horrendous of a Saturday morning,” reports RTE.
