Noel Grealish raises the issue of personal remittances being sent from Ireland to other countries but his figures of €3.54bn are incorrect

Independent TD for Galway, Noel Grealish, has been condemned for his comments in Dáil about money being sent by foreign nationals to countries such as Poland, Nigeria, the UK and France.

Grealish claimed that almost €3.55 billion was sent to Nigeria. It’s understood that his comments are based on figures contained in World Bank reports. However, thejournal.ie reports that his figures are estimates provided by Nigerian authorities and not accurate data.

Deputy Grealish alleged that “€10 billion” had been sent abroad in the last eight years according to RTE.

Thejournal.ie reported that stating that “€3.54 billion was sent to Nigeria” from people living in Ireland over the past eight years is incorrect.

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, and Grealish had a back and fourth debate over the matter in the Chamber.

Deputy Grealish recently spoke at a public forum in Oughterard, Galway, where citizens were expressing their opposition to opening of Direct Provision centre in their town.”.

The original article published here was a report on the annunciations made by Noel Grealish TD in Dail Eireann. The original figures reported by TheLiberal.ie were not stated as fact and were not based on anything other than comments made by Noel Grealish TD. Various other news media, including Thejournal.ie have reported that his figures and observations are incorrect.
