Fears a repeat of yesterday’s atrocious scenes in the Dail will happen again today

All eyes will be on Leinster House today to see if more of the same antics will happen in the Dail chamber today.

On Tuesday, a heated dispute over speaking time in the Dáil erupted into chaos today, March 25, 2025, as the Government and opposition clashed bitterly, according to the Irish Mirror. The long-simmering issue, which has disrupted the 34th Dáil for weeks, reached a boiling point during Leaders’ Questions at 2 PM, threatening to derail parliamentary proceedings entirely.

The row centres on a Government proposal to allocate additional speaking rights to a select group of TDs who support the coalition but are not formally part of it, a move the opposition has branded as “undemocratic” and “a subversion of the Constitution,” as stated by Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald in the Dáil chamber, reports the Mirror. As the session unfolded, McDonald accused the Government of ramming through reforms to silence dissent, with shouts of “disgrace” echoing across the chamber, reported by the Irish Mirror from the live proceedings. Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl struggled to maintain order, suspending the sitting twice amid the uproar.

Government representatives, including Tánaiste Micheál Martin, defended the changes, arguing they ensure fair representation for all elected TDs, as he stated during the session, per the Irish Mirror. However, the opposition threatened a walkout, with Independent TD Thomas Pringle warning, “We could bring the whole thing down if we refuse to cooperate,” as quoted by the Irish Mirror from his remarks in the Dáil. The contentious proposal was slated for a vote later in the afternoon, with all options—including mass withdrawal from the chamber—still on the table.
Social media posts are questioning the functionality of Ireland’s parliament.
