Parts of Ireland might have significant snowfall on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, according to new weather forecasts released on Christmas Eve, reports The Mirror.
According to the updated maps released by WXCharts.com on Tuesday morning, snowfall is expected on New Year’s Eve afternoon as far north as County Donegal and as far south as County Cork.
According to WXCharts.com, the counties of Galway, Mayo, Sligo, and Donegal appear to be the only areas in the west of the nation seeing the most snowfall; however, conditions are expected to deteriorate on January 2 and New Year’s Day, reports The Mirror.
Although it’s uncertain how long it will remain, the updated maps also show snow on Thursday, January 2, 2025, covering areas of Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal, and the whole North of Ireland.
Although Met Eireann has not specifically predicted snow for the New Year, it acknowledges that “current indications suggest conditions will turn more unsettled this week” since long-range weather forecasts are notoriously difficult to anticipate, reports The Mirror.
Additionally, Met Eireann reports that “rainfall amounts signalling slightly above average over much of the country” would fall during the six days from Monday, December 30, to Sunday, January 5.
Irish weather specialist and creator of Carlow Weather on X, previously Twitter, added to the ambiguity surrounding the New Year’s Day forecast: Alan O’Reilly said: “While weather models do show an increasing trend of cooler air for start of January the details are far from clear and a cool spell could be short lived blast or possibly start of a few rounds of cold spells. NAO and AO both possibly going negative increases chances of cold,” reports The Mirror.
Top temperatures on Christmas Day in Ireland are predicted to be between 11 and 13 degrees, making it a warm day overall.
“Christmas Day will be mild and quite cloudy, though some brighter breaks will develop,” say Met Eireann. Most places will be dry but a few patches of light rain and drizzle will affect the western half of the country. Highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees in moderate southwest winds, fresh at times on west and northwest coasts,” reports The Mirror.
