Fears of new world war grow as tensions simmer in Eastern Europe

Tensions are still simmering in Eastern Europe following a discussion between Russian President Vladamir Putin and U.S President Joe Biden as fears that a confrontation between Russia and Ukraine which could drag NATO into the fray linger.

Following a U.S and EU backed coup in Ukraine in 2014 which saw a government installed that would move the country closer to NATO and Brussels, the Russian population in the Crimean Peninsula voted overwhelmingly to join Russia, after which a peaceful annexation took place.

However, tensions persist today after a bloody war between the Ukraine’s western installed government and Russian separatists in the East of the country.

Russia has been accused of massing troops and equipment on Ukraine’s border with plans to annex the east of the country with a majority Russian population, but President Putin has insisted that this build up is meant to deter NATO from accepting Ukraine as a member and to warn western nations against giving Kiev offensive weaponry.

Tensions have leveled for now, but many observers fear that a confrontation is simply a matter of time with extremely bellicose rhetoric coming from some in the Biden administration and other U.S politicians who seem more concerned about protecting Ukraine’s borders than their own southern border.
