Fears of people panic buying fuel at Irish petrol stations as prices to sky rocket within weeks

Queues could form at gas station pumps and panic buying could lead to supply problems as drivers try to make it past the deadline for a big fuel price hike.

Oil and petrol prices are set to rise sharply next month as excise duty cuts have been introduced to address the cost of living crisis.

There are now growing concerns that any dramatic price hike could lead to queues at gas stations.

Kevin McPartlan, head of Fuels for Ireland, has called for a gradual rise in prices to avoid potential chaos.

He said: “I think it’s really important that we don’t have any particular day where fuel goes up very dramatically,” reports The Mirror.

Mr McPartlan noted the impact of the change on the avg-size family car.

He told Newstalk radio: ‘When it comes to petrol, it would mean an increase of around 12 euros for a full tank of fuel for an average family car.

Transport expert Conor Faughnan said fares would be “enormously high”, reports The Mirror.

He added: “No matter what way you do it, when you get to the end, if you reimpose those sort of pre-crisis taxes that were being levied on fuels, you have to remember for context, there are enormously high taxes. What they did effectively was to knock off about 21 cent per litre to the price of petrol and 60 cent per litre to the price of diesel and that helped, helped enormously. If they rip that bandage off, then that affects all consumers immediately. It goes straight back on the price,” reports The Mirror.
