Female Ukrainian fencer refuses to shake hands with Russian opponent, becomes disqualified, International Olympic Committee steps in and immediately guarantees a place for her at the Paris Olympics -world laughing at the Russian opponent

A female Ukrainian fencer, Olga Kharlan, recently refused (quite rightly) to shake hands with a Russian opponent at a qualifying event in Milan, Italy. The move, while ethically righteous, earned her a disqualification, which would have prevented her from ascending in the ranking and potentially from accessing the Olympics. The Russian team rubbed its hands with spiteful glee.

Enter the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which said, let’s just see about that. Upon learning of Ms. Kharlan’s heroic display of courage on the international sporting stage, immediately guaranteed a place for her at the Paris Olympics.

The entire world is now laughing at the Russian delegation, whose schadenfreude was short-lived indeed.
