Investigation underway after Luas security man demanded €40 cash off person for no ticket

Transdev, the operator of Luaus, launched an investigation after one of its security staff was videotaped demanding 40 euros in cash from a customer, reports The Mirror.

Footage seen by Dublin Live shows a security officer telling a confused passenger that he “doesn’t have a ticket” after the man was apparently removed from the tram.

The security personal tells the man “you will get arrested” – before asking him to “take forty quid out of your pocket there please”, reports The Mirror.

The passenger appears to be trying to use Google Translate to ask the security officer why he was fined.

“Explain to me why I am fined”, he asks. “I told you we have to get forty euro now or we are getting the police and you will be arrested,” the security man replies, reports The Mirror.

The passenger, who seemed to speak little English, again asked why he had been arrested.

The security officer said, The security officer says: “Because you are not complying with me, that’s why. You didn’t tag on so the fine is €45 – but we will accept €40 because you have money [cash] there”, reports The Mirror.

If a passenger is caught traveling on Luas without a valid ticket or marked with a Leap card, they have 14 days to pay a fine of €45, which is issued with the ticket.

At the end of the video, it says that the passenger paid €40 in cash “because he feared getting arrested”, reports The Mirror.

A spokesperson for Transdev confirmed they were aware of the recording and an investigation was launched.

She said: “We are aware of the video and are investigating the matter”, reports The Mirror.
