Fianna Fáil to push motion of no-confidence in Taoiseach

Fianna Fáil have confirmed that they will table a motion of no-confidence in the Taoiseach once the Dáil reconvenes at the end of the month.

Sinn Féin yesterday announced that they are also calling for the immediate resignation of Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Attorney General Máire Whelan and are urging the Dáil to reconvene this week following the publication of the interim report of the Fennelly commission yesterday.

Fianna Fáil have described the report as a “damning indictment of the actions of Enda Kenny”.

The report concluded that the visit by former Secretary General of the Department of Justice Brian Purcell to the home of former Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan was the catalyst for the resignation of the commissioner.

Despite this Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald said that the report shows that the Taoiseach was unambiguously clear in the sequence of events leading to the resignation.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheal Martin has described Kenny’s actions as “shifty and underhanded”, stating “now in the real world that is effectively sacking the garda commissioner. He was left with no option, and the garda commissioner if you read the report is very, very clear…’I was left with no option’ – he said” in relation to the report.
