FIFA World Cup: Muslera howler proves costly as France beat Uruguay to book their place in the semi-finals

Uruguay’s dreams have been ended this afternoon as France came out on top in a 2-0 victory to secure their place in semi-finals.

In a match that was far from stylish, it was the French who came out on top to take the spoils this afternoon.

The French who will be more than pleased with their gritty performance have Rafael Varane and Antoine Griezmann to thank as a plucky Uruguay came up short.

Uruguay who were missing their star man Edison Cavani due to injury, looked to cause another upset by Didier Deschamps men following their 2-1 victory over Portugal in the last 16.

However there were no heroics as a dogged French side who played without their usual flair held firm to comfortably book their pace in the last four.

Although Uruguay created a number of chances in the first half, their lack of real creativity proved costly as France took the lead when Varane glanced a header home from a Griezmann free-kick.

Uruguay could have drawn level before the break but not only for a superb save by Lloris who palmed Caceres past the post.

The second half began with a higher tempo and although Uruguay threatened, they failed to test Lloris as the half grew on.

France all but booked their place in the last four when that man Griezmann put them up on the 61st minute when his tame long range shot slipped through the hands of Muslera.

The costly mistake by the Uruguayan Goalkeeper proved crucial as Uruguayan heads almost immediately dropped with little under a half an hour to go.

France who will now go onto to face either Brazil or Belgium coasted home as a depleted Uruguayan side failed to register any real chance to change the game.
