Fighting back: Italy expected to elect conservative anti-migration politician Giorgia Meloni as new Prime Minister

If the polls are accurate, Italians will elect their country’s most right-wing government since the end of World War II on Sunday. This is no small thing in a country that has had 69 governments since 1946.

The coalition, which is expected to win a majority of seats in the Italian parliament, is headed by Giorgia Meloni, leader of Fratelli d’Italia, the Brothers of Italy party.

If her coalition wins, she too will make history by becoming Italy’s first female prime minister.

45-yr-old Meloni grew up in a working-class district of Rome known more for cultivating left-wing activists than producing fiery far-right politicians. Her party has roots in the neo-fascist movement that emerged from the rubble of World War II.
