Russia has vetoed a UN resolution to recognise “climate change” as a threat to global security.
The joint resolution was put forward by Ireland and Niger and would have ensured that the threat posed by climate change was added to the United Nations Security Council’s routine agenda.
The resolution was also opposed by India while China abstained however, Russia as a one of the five permanent members of the security council had the ability to kill the imitative and did so on Monday morning.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has said it is “deeply disappointing” that Russia vetoed the resolution tweeting:
“One country decided to veto a resolution, co-sponsored by 113 UN members, on Climate & Security at UNSC today. A historic opportunity to recognise Climate Change as contributing to conflict has been vetoed for now, but the consensus of international opinion is more than clear!”
