It was fine dining for the country’s prisoners over the past year after a recent report found that convicts were given mouth watering food that cost the Irish taxpayer a whooping €7.8m.
According to latest figures released by the Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald, the Irish Prison Service spent the staggering sum on high end dishes including Thai chicken curries, beef stews and chicken casseroles.
The report which was released under the Freedom of Information Act found that the nations cons were also treated to top quality foods including ice cream, fruit trifles, and fine cuts of steak and meat.
The latest figures show that the Irish Prison Service spent in total €7.8million on food for just over 4,000 prisoners. Although the latest figure did fall by €969,000 from 2015 it was still marked as massive outlay for the Irish taxpayer.
Figures also showed that between 2011 and 2016 the food bill for the prison service totalled a massive €51.5million.
