Salvage team brought in to recover the wreckage of Rescue 116

The wreckage of Irish Coast Gaurd rescue helicopter 116 will be reportedly removed from the seabed this coming weekend after a Co Cork salvage crew were called in to recover the stricken helicopter.

It is understood The Irish Coast Guard has enlisted the help of the Bere Island company Atlantic Towage and Marine, to recover the helicopter which crashed with four people onboard off the Mayo coast on March 14th.

The salvage crew who successfully recovered the racing yacht Rambler 100 after it capsized off the Fastnet rock in 2011, say they hope to raise a five-tonne section off the seabed and inspect the area around it.

It is understood the team will also work with Naval Service divers and the Marine Institute’s remotely operated vehicle, Holland 1 during the operation.

The Irish Coast Guard say the operation is being conducted as part of the search operation to find the two remaining missing team members Paul Ormsby (53) and Ciaran Smith (38).
