Fine Gael Dáil by-election candidate, Verona Murphy, is continuing to apologise and backtrack as she is relentlessly pilloried for her comments on Muslim migrants coming to Ireland.

Murphy faces attacks from the media, migrant rights groups and from Fine Gael Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan, who is the midst of pushing for legislation on “hate speech” which would allow the government to determine what is acceptable to say, particularly in relation to migration.

The prospective Wexford TD said that some asylum seekers may have to be “deprogrammed” on RTÉ’s This Week Programme on Sunday.

Intelligence Services across Europe and the Middle East have made similar remarks about asylum seekers coming from conflict zones, however, in Ireland the media and political establishment treat any kind of critical commentary on migration, and in particular Islam, as a form of blasphemy.

For her part, Murphy has displayed a lack of any kind of fortitude or courage in the face of the attacks, despite indications online that her comments are popular with the general public, and has issued a number of apologies, which have failed to elicit mercy for the PC brigade.
