Fine Gael’s Catherine Noone says Ireland needs stricter drink laws due to Irish women being 4th heaviest drinkers in the world

We all enjoy a few drinks from time to time, but it now looks like there could be an actual national drinking crisis.

A survey this week (here) claims that Irish women are the 4th heaviest drinkers in the world out of 189 countries.

Irish women are drinking between one and two bottles of wine per night, every night.

Fine Gael’s Catherine Noone says Ireland needs to change drink laws as a result.

According to The Sun, Noone said:

“More needs to done to combat the problem of alcohol consumption. This new survey regarding the drinking habits of Irish women is profoundly alarming.

“I am now calling for the adoption of the Icelandic model in tackling alcohol abuse among young people, which has proven highly effective to date.

“In Iceland the Government reduced the visibility and availability of alcohol. They increased the legal drinking age to 20 years and put a ban on alcohol and tobacco advertisements.”

“Alcohol is still in some cases ‘pocket-money cheap’ as supermarkets sell their own brand alcohol, which is appealing to Irish youths.”
