Fine Gael’s Richard Bruton will not stand at the next election but will retire on massive pension instead

Former Fine Gael TD Richard Bruton is expected to announce later today that he will not stand in the next general election, reports RTE.

Mr Bruton, leader of the Fine Gael parliamentary party, was first elected TD in 1982.

He is a former deputy leader of the party and has held several ministerial positions, most recently as Minister of Communications, Climate Protection and the Environment from 2018 to 2020, reports RTE.

Before holding this position, he was Minister of Education.

He was elected in 2020 in the tenth constituency of the Dublin Bay North constituency with five seats.

Richard Bruton, who turned 70 in March last year, led an unsuccessful attack on Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny in 2010.

He is the brother of the former Taoiseach John Bruton.

Neither Richard Bruton nor Fine Gael have publicly commented on his expected public announcement in his constituency this evening, reports RTE.
