First thing when you wake up and even during the night: New study reveals how often us Irish use our smartphones

Almost nine in ten adults in Ireland have smartphone access. A new study now reveals how often it is accessed.

It found that nearly three quarters of those aged 18-24 check their phone during the night.

The study, carried out by Ipsos MORI on behalf of Deloitte, involved a nationally representative sample of 1,000 Irish adults.

It found more people in Ireland have access to smartphones than laptops or tablets.

87% of those aged 18-24 use their devices “always” or “very often” when travelling on public transport, meeting friends, shopping or watching TV.

Over one third said they reach straight for their smartphone upon waking up, checking messages first, followed by social networks and then emails.

16% of those aged 25-34 said they have disagreement once or several times a week with their partners over mobile phone use.

The use of Apps scored particularly high with Irish consumers, with a fifth of respondents stating they have 11 to 20 on their smartphone.
Two fifths take photos daily on their device, and 57% regularly use their phones to watch short videos.

Smartphone owners in Ireland are also fans of online shopping, with 43% using their device shopping websites at least once weekly.
